Art made by artificial intelligence

At WOYC on-demand we’ve been playing with the idea that bots might start creating pieces of fine art…scary stuff.. Are you ready to dive into the world of art and AI? Midjourney and Discord have got you covered. It’s fun and quite addictive so give yourself at least an hour to play around with this process.

Let’s start with the fun stuff, then end with some definite cons or issues that could arise from using AI art.

First things first, let's talk about Midjourney. It's a platform that lets you create amazing digital art with the help of AI. Sign up and connect your Discord account. All you need to do is upload your image, choose from their library or give Midjourney prompts to give the bot enough information to transform those words into a unique piece of art. The more detailed directions and prompts you enter, the closer you will get to your desired outcome. Look at some specific words that everyone is using to guide you on how to get the best use of prompts.

Once your art is created it gives you 4 variations. Now you get the change to do a full variation, individual variations or upscale the ones you love. The ‘U’ buttons upscale an image generating a larger version of the selected image and adding more details. The ‘V’ buttons create slight variations of the selected grid image. Creating a variation generates a new image grid similar to the chosen image's overall style and composition. Keep refining your design using this method until you get your desired outcome.

Using AI to make art is a fun and unique way to express your creativity. With Midjourney and Discord, anyone can turn their images into stunning works of art. So, why not give it a try and see what kind of masterpieces you can create then add them to your favorite print on-demand products perhaps?

Now, with everything in life there is always a balance to maintain. Let’s highlight a few concerns about AI art.

  • You did not personally create it -There is a pride in creating art with your own hands. An artist has mastered their skill over decades. Now anyone without any skill can create art in seconds. Perhaps it devalues the origins and principles of creating a masterpiece over-time, a cathartic process of blood, sweat and tears.

  • Lack of human touch: AI generated art may lack the personal touch and emotional depth that comes with being created by a human artist.

  • Ethical concerns: The ethical implications of using AI to create art are concerning, particularly if it results in the displacement of human artists.

  • Copyright: In the US, there are no copyright protections for works created by a machine; copyrightable works require human authorship. That isn't stopping people from trying to copyright AI-generated art.

There needs some controls around AI art so that it does not disrupt livelihoods in negative ways. Perhaps some digital marker or identification of some sort that would limit AI arts use. Technology is advancing at an incredible rate and without some boundaries we could enter some dangerous territory. Our digital lives over the next 10 years is certainly going to be interesting.

In summary decided what your intent for AI art is. Ours was to play and learn. If you want to create a business with AI art consider that there are additional limitations with export size and quality on top of the above bullet-points.

Checkout my cool design that is the featured image of this blog post. I had an idea for a kids book and came up with this character and made various iterations for 5 minutes to get it perfect :)

Cheers.
